AWS cut the price of Glue by 30 percent in the new version. Not a side deal, not a discount for big customers. The announcement itself says it plainly.
Fact
The facts: Glue 6.0 costs 30 percent less than previous versions of the service. The foundation is updated to Apache Spark 4.1, Python 3.13 and Scala 2.13. Support for Apache Iceberg, the table format for data, is now full for version 3: the VARIANT type with shredding for semi-structured data, geometry and geography types, nanosecond-precision timestamps for sensor and financial data, and handling of unknown types without breaking the schema. Added are declarative pipelines in Spark, where the system itself decides execution order, Python user-defined functions over Arrow with no repacking overhead, and a real-time streaming mode with under ten milliseconds of latency. It's available immediately in every region that runs Glue. Source: AWS's announcement of 21 August.
The announcement doesn't mention artificial intelligence once. The only nearby thing is compatibility with SageMaker Unified Studio. If you connect it to AI here, that's my reading, not their claim.
For the teams moving data through Glue every day, this is the rare combination: a newer engine and a lower bill, without touching a line of code. That doesn't happen often.
