Fan covers on Spotify go under license: with credit and money for the original artist

Spotify and Merlin - the voice of independent labels with about 15% of the global market - reached a deal for the upcoming fan cover and remix tool. Participation is the artist's choice; every derivative track carries credit, compensation, and a link back to the original. Small detail, big difference.

I've spent twenty years playing other people's music on stages, and I know how fast an old song sounds new in someone else's hands. I've been waiting for this news. Not because it's big - because it's put together right.

Fact

The facts: on 4 August Spotify and Merlin announced a licensing agreement for the platform's upcoming fan cover and remix tool. Merlin represents independent labels from over 70 countries - about 15% of the global recorded music market. Participation is optional for each artist. The tool will launch as a paid add-on; per Spotify, every derivative track carries credit and compensation for the original artist and sends the listener back to the original. The same day, the company reported a second quarter with 300 million Premium subscribers (up 9% year over year) and 777 million monthly active users. When we wrote about SZA's case, the takeaway was simple: the right to give away your own - voice, song, tone - needs to live inside the tool itself, not in court after the fact. This agreement is the same idea, signed clean - consent sits at the door, credit is built in, the money flows by contract. The text doesn't say a word about AI. But the mechanics are exactly what AI music has been waiting three years for.

The remix has always existed. What's new is that it now has a cash register.

There's one thing I'll be watching: whether the accounting holds up. If the licensed remix sends real money and listeners back to the original, the same mechanism is ready for AI voices too. The tool already knows how to ask permission. What's left is for everyone else to start asking.
